Daegu Metropolitan City - During the IAAF World Championships, the Daegu Metropolitan Government and Samsung Electronics the held “Samsung Media Art” event, where various images were reflected on the walls of City Hall by a beam projector installed on a building opposite.
Under the “Dream-White Night” main theme, works by 16 internationally noted media artists and 10 selected domestic media art pieces made by local university students were showcased, alongside a Samsung projection mapping program, every evening from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., from Aug. 28 through Sept. 3.
The presented pieces were “Invisible Needle” (2003) by Kim Soo-ja and “Night Vigil” (2005), inspired by the opera, “Tristan und Isolde” by Bill Viola. Cao Fei’s “Shadow Life” (2011), which uses finger shadow puppets to deliver political, environmental and cultural messages, and “In between Buddha and Jesus Christ” by Lee Yong-baek, noted artists at the Venice Biennale this year, were also available through cutting-edge digital devices.
The festive atmosphere peaked when Samsung’s promotional video clips as well as collegian contest winners’ pieces were unveiled to the public.
“The ‘Samsung Media Art’ event was designed to bring people closer the to media art world during the World Championships. We hope the event has boosted the quality of the Championships to a new level where sports meets art,” said Kwon Gye-hyun, an executive at Samsung.
“The exhibition was designed to celebrate the World Championships, where athletes with dreams, passion and the willingness to challenge one another gather and show their stuff,” said Lee Ji-yoon, head of the directing company, SUUM.
‘The title, “Dream-White Night,” tells all: the indefatigable enthusiasm of the athletes meets the passion of the media artists, who never tire of trying new technology,” she added.
