A discussion was held for the development of the aero-electronic IT convergence industry belt, raising expectations that it could lead to synergy creation in related sectors based on the IT, R&D and aero industrial production infrastructure of Daegu, Daejeon and Gyeongnam.
The aviation industry is a high-tech and creative industry capable of developing through cooperation with other national key sectors, such as machinery, automobiles and IT. More emphasis is also being placed on its easy convergence with the current IT technologies as demand booms for next-generation airplanes. However, the industry needs the government’s active involvement as product development is a long and costly process and there is a high barrier to entry due to efforts by advanced countries to protect their own technologies.
Against this backdrop, officials from municipal governments will gather to discuss ways to develop the aero-electronic industry by stimulating the convergence of science and IT technologies.
With business people from Daegu, Daejeon and the Daegu-Daejeon Techno Park on hand, the meeting was held in a conference room in the Daegu Gyeongbuk Design Center at 2 p.m. on March 14. The meeting was arranged to discuss the research being conducted by the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade into the formation of an aero-electronic IT convergence industrial belt, which was initiated jointly by Daegu and Daejeon last August.
In particular, the meeting was attended not just by related businesses, such as Korea Aerospace Industries, LIG Nex1, Dassault Systems and Huone, but also by experts from academia and research organizations, such as the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, the Daegu Digital Industry Promotion Agency, the Integrated Logistics Support Research Institute of Chungnam National University, the 3D Convergence Technology Center of Kyungpook National University and Gyungil University and officials from the aero industry, including the Aerospace Center of Gyeongnam Technopark. They discussed ways to review the feasibility of the current project and exchanged opinions about regional cooperation.
According to a 2010 report by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, the aviation industry grew to become a US$430 billion market in 2008, and it is expected to expand into a $700 billion market by 2020.
In addition, the industry has a close affiliation with other industries, such as machinery, automobiles and IT. Given that Daegu has huge potential in the IT sector, it is expected that the aviation industry will provide a great business opportunity down the road.
The outcome of the discussions between officials from Daegu, Daejeon and South Gyeongsang Province will be used to build the so-called Triangle Aviation Cluster by combining the IT capacity of Daegu, the R&D infrastructure in Daejeon and the production capacity in South Gyeongsang Province.
Through such efforts, about 100 businesses related to the aero-electronic industry will be nurtured with the aim of turning it into a cross-the-board cluster with annual sales of 7 trillion won and the creation of 10,000 jobs.
