Daegu Metropolitan City Government (Mayor Kwon Young-jin), Woori Bank (CEO Lee Soon-woo) and the Deagu Creative Economy and Innovation Center (DCEIC) (Chief Kim Seon-il) signed an agreement on the provision of technology finance support for the vitalization of a creative economy in the Daegu region, at 10:30 a.m., on October 1, at Daegu City Hall. The agreement will provide phase-by-phase technology finance support and management consulting to assist small- and -medium sized enterprise (SME) and venture company start-ups and their growth.

DCEIC previously signed a cooperation agreement with Samsung, on September 15, to provide SME and venture start-ups with creative ideas and practical assistance in manufacturing, technology and marketing from the large conglomerate. The recent agreement is forged with Woori Bank, a major commercial bank, which was a driver behind Korea’s modernization and industrialization, to provide specialized financial services, including funding and consulting. The agreements will create a base for stable growth for start-ups and businesses in the region.

According to the agreement, Daegu City will oversee the support for outstanding technology business start-ups, and the DCEIC will identify and recommend outstanding technology business start-ups, and Woori Bank will provide recommended businesses with comprehensive financial and non-financial services, including funding at prime rates, consulting services, and specialized technology finance products.

Following its agreement on cooperation for the vitalization of a creative economy with Daegu Bank, a major financial institution in the region, on September 29, the recent agreement on the provision of technology finance support with Woori Bank is expected to offer practical benefits in finance, the most difficult field for start-ups and growing regional businesses.

Earlier in April, this year, the DCEIC installed a shared office, team cooperation room, mentoring room and seminar room on the first and third floors of the Daegu Trade Center, offering support for the sophistication and commercialization of creative ideas and mentoring services for SMEs and venture companies.

On September 15, DCEIC held a ceremony marking its launch and enlargement, which was attended by President Park Geun-hye. This will enable the sharing of the technology, funds and marketing know-how of Samsung to regional businesses through a mutual agreement for the realization of a creative economy and will provide a comprehensive support system for youth entrepreneurs, SMEs and ventures.

Daegu Major Kwon Young-jin said, “It is highly significant that Woori Bank, which was founded with national capital in 1899, and was the center of Korea’s industrialization, will act as a sponsor for creative economy technology finance in the Daegu region.” He added, “The promise to support the vitalization of a creative economy in the region by Samsung, Daegu Bank and Woori Bank has laid a strong cornerstone for Daegu to become a leading city in the creation of a creative economy”.

Woori Bank CEO Lee Soon-woo remarked, “As a bank specializing in corporate finance, we will be a faithful partner to regional SMEs and venture companies seeking to grow from start-ups into global enterprises by providing comprehensive services, including financial support and consulting.” He went on, “We promise to become a bank specializing in a creative economy and will contribute to the growth of SMEs and venture companies with outstanding technology and regional economic development.
