Daegu City invited some 210 people to participate in a trial ride on city transit Line 3, which is to open during the first half of 2015, to listen to their advice on the city’s plan to develop tourist attractions around the monorail. The invited people included members of the city’s Creative Project Team, urban design experts, government employees, elderly people from the Hyanggyeo in Buk-gu, members of the U.S. Forces in Korea and their family members.
The city has conducted 23 test runs for the entire section of Line 3, from the Chilgok KNU Hospital Station to Yeongji Station, since April. A total of 2,600 people have taken part in the test runs, including government employees of the city and district governments and experts from related agencies.
The latest test run was open to members of the city government’s Creative Project Team and the Department of City Design, government employees, and representatives from the Chilgok Hyanggyeo School. Forty-five foreigners, including members of the US Forces in Daegu and their family members, were also invited.
It was meaningful to collect opinions from a wide range of people, such as the youth, the elderly and foreigners, on what needs to be done to develop the monorail into a tourist attraction, beyond a simple convenient means of transportation, including the improvement of the surrounding environment and tourism resources, and the monorail’s possible connection with other means of transportation.
The city also plans to conduct a test run for city and provincial government officials, including officials from the Department of City Design and the Department of Park and Green Belt, inside the Bureau of City Reconstruction & Creation of Daegu City, so as to pool their ideas for improving the surrounding environment and landscape along the line. Daegu City and the related district office have been already working to build a rooftop park and improve the Palgeo and Beomeo Streams around the railway. The city will come up with plans to make up for any shortcomings after the test run.
To develop tourist goods and tourism resources related to Line 3, officials from the city’s Department of Tourism, the Department of City Design and the Daegu Metro Transit Construction Headquarters will devise ways to link the diverse cultural resources, such as the Palgongsan and Apsan mountains, the Modern History Ally and Kim Kwang-seok Road, with tourism related to Line 3.
An Yong-mo, head of the Daegu Metro Transit Construction Headquarters, said, “We will continue to conduct test runs until its formal opening next year, in order to relieve any traffic inconveniences faced by citizens. We will also try to bring a synergy effect to tourism related to Line 3 by improving the natural environment of Daegu, including Palgongsan and the Geumhogang (river), and incorporating culture and arts.”
